How the Wings medical repatriation process works

Medical repatriation, whether by air or land, requires professional expertise. Wings Medical Group has a tried and trusted process for aeromedical and road ambulance repatriation.

From the moment Wings receives a call or e-mail to its 24-hour aeromedical support centre, its team of experienced professionals begins the process of support, reassurance and practical organisation to help bring a patient home swiftly and safely.

The Process

1. Call or email received and logged by the Wings Aeromedical Support Centre

2. Personal details of patient and next of kin recorded and basic medical history taken (this can include a conversation with doctors on location)

3. Medical repatriation needs are assessed by the Wings team in the UK in collaboration with medical professionals on location

4. Method of repatriation advised. This could be intensive care air ambulance, private charter air taxi, commercial flights (stretchered or seated, with medical escort) or road ambulance

5. A cost quote is provided to the insurance company, patient or family and approved.

6. A full medical assessment of the patient is undertaken by local doctors in collaboration with the Wings medical team.

7. Patient is given clearance for flight or road transportation. Flights or road ambulance and hospital-airport transfers booked

8. Admission arranged to UK NHS or private medical facilities if required

9. Wings medical team or medical escort dispatched to location

10. Patient and, where required, family or supporting friends repatriated to country of origin

11. Ground transfer from airport to final destination.

Throughout the process, the Wings Support Centre will provide information updates, support and practical assistance where possible to family and friends on location or in the patient’s country of origin.
